What they work on

  1. Define how momentary negative mood and nicotine craving relate to smoking lapse within individuals, using phone-based ecological momentary assessment in up to 150 adults who smoke menthol cigarettes during a planned quit attempt.
  2. Test whether momentary perceived stress changes the links between mood, craving and lapse, using pre-quit and post-quit EMA waves with smoking verified by exhaled carbon monoxide.
  3. Examine time to first lapse, time to relapse and cigarette consumption over 3 months of follow-up surveys after a quit attempt.

More about the research

Quitting often fails at the moment of a 'lapse', the first cigarette after a quit attempt. Little is known about what triggers lapses in people who smoke menthols in real time.

Why it matters

Adults who smoke menthol cigarettes have more difficulty quitting and suffer more tobacco-related disease. Pinpointing the real-time moods, cravings and stressors that trigger lapses could inform phone-based quit-smoking programs that step in at the right moment. This could help narrow tobacco-related health differences for this group.

Examine how interacting demographic factors, such as income and sex, relate to real-time changes in stress, negative emotion, self-efficacy and tobacco use, using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) phone surveys.

Stephen Wilson

Pennsylvania State University, PA·Psychology

Examine whether moment-to-moment changes in how separated the default mode and executive control networks are predict the risk of a smoking lapse, using an fMRI lapse task in adults after 12 hours without nicotine.

Michael Kotlyar

University of Minnesota, MN·Public Health & Epidemiology

Test whether people who smoke menthol cigarettes take up nicotine pouches more than medicinal nicotine, using a randomized 6-week study of 252 participants in an experimental marketplace.
