What they work on

  1. Examine how interacting demographic factors, such as income and sex, relate to real-time changes in stress, negative emotion, self-efficacy and tobacco use, using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) phone surveys.
  2. Use wearable sensors alongside EMA to capture objective, real-world measures of how emotions and smoking behavior shift with time and social context.
  3. Advance methods for studying combinations of demographic factors, rather than single factors, in intensive real-time mobile health (mHealth) data on tobacco-related outcomes.
  4. Generate findings that can guide just-in-time adaptive interventions, which deliver tailored smoking-cessation support at the moments people need it most.

More about the research

Most studies look at one factor at a time, such as income. That approach misses differences within groups and how several factors together, such as income and sex, shape people's experiences and behavior. This project asks how combinations of demographic factors interact with stress, emotion and daily context to influence smoking as it happens.

Why it matters

Smoking causes many cancers, and declines in tobacco use have been uneven. By showing how overlapping demographic, social and contextual factors shape stress and smoking moment to moment, this work could guide personalized, well-timed cancer prevention and quit-smoking interventions. These could help people in groups that existing approaches have served less well.
