What they work on
- Quantify how preconception and prenatal exposure to extreme heat and wildfire smoke PM2.5 affects risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, using Cox regression within a distributed lag nonlinear framework on about 6.5 million births in claims data.
- Map how risk from combined heat and smoke exposure varies across all counties in the contiguous U.S., using K-means spatial clustering.
- Estimate the combined and delayed effects of smoke PM2.5 constituents, smoke ozone and heat on HDP and gestational diabetes, using Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression Distributed Lag Models.
- Test whether community-level social vulnerability strengthens or weakens the links between heat, wildfire smoke and pregnancy complications.
More about the research
They hit marginalized communities hardest. As heat waves and wildfires become more common, a key question is whether these exposures, alone or together, raise the risk of these conditions, and whether community disadvantage makes the risk worse.
Why it matters
Pregnant people facing heat waves and wildfire smoke, especially in socially vulnerable communities, may be at higher risk of pregnancy hypertension and gestational diabetes. Pinpointing the riskiest exposures, places and pregnancy windows could guide personal and clinical protective steps. It could also inform targeted interventions and environmental and public health policy.
