Engineering decisions shape long-term sustainability: how a town defends against floods, how a water utility responds to an emergency, or how a future space industry builds parts. Yet the tools used to judge environmental effects rarely account for the people who make these choices.

What they work on
- Test how risk attitudes, interorganizational networks and access to life cycle assessment results shape sustainability outcomes in drinking water emergency response, using a serious game played by stakeholders.
- Measure how decision theoretic LCA affects stakeholder learning by comparing concept maps before and after the game, using text mining, network analysis and machine learning.
- Determine how multi-material and multi-process choices affect the quality and sustainability of parts made in space from metallic debris and lunar regolith, using hybrid additive/forming modeling and simulated-space experiments.
- Assess the Earth and space environmental impacts of in-space manufacturing using prospective life cycle assessment, scenario analysis and multi-objective decision-making.
- Optimize the siting, sizing and timing of nature-based solutions for natural hazard resilience across living hubs in New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Kentucky, and test behavioral interventions such as augmented reality tours.
More about the research
Across three projects, this work combines life cycle assessment (LCA), a method for tallying the environmental, health and economic effects of a product or system over its whole life, with stakeholder engagement and modeling to support better decisions.
Why it matters
This work could help water utilities and emergency planners make choices that are safer and more sustainable. It could help communities in New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Kentucky choose and site nature-based defenses against natural hazards. It could also help a growing space industry manufacture parts from space resources with smaller impacts on Earth and space environments.
