Cars increasingly behave like computers on wheels. In software-defined vehicles (SDVs), many functions are controlled by software that can be changed after sale.

- Grants

What they work on
- Develop a vehicle-edge-cloud framework in which software-defined vehicles and roadside units work together to deliver verified over-the-air software updates on time.
- Use compressive sensing to transmit vehicle data efficiently while in motion, with low bandwidth and low delay.
- Build and test an open-source software-defined vehicle framework and dynamic over-the-air update strategies on physical testbeds.
More about the research
Fixing bugs or adding features requires over-the-air (OTA) updates, but the methods used for phones do not suit vehicles. Vehicles have more complex hardware and software, and they are often moving. Delivering verified software quickly, and sending vehicle data back efficiently, is a safety and cost problem.
Why it matters
Timely, verified over-the-air updates could help prevent accidents and cut costs caused by vehicle software faults. They could also support emergency response, adaptive compliance with state rules, and location-based performance tuning. Drivers, automakers and road safety programs could benefit from software-defined vehicles that stay up to date.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
