Dry eye is a common disease of the tear film and the surface of the eye. It lowers quality of life, is one of the most frequent reasons people seek eye care, and is costly for society.

What they work on

  1. Identify social factors, such as race and ethnicity and preferred language spoken, linked to differential access to care and prognosis in dry eye, using electronic health records from the Sue Anschutz-Rogers Eye Center.
  2. Build multivariable prognostic models that combine many routinely recorded patient factors to estimate each person's risk of dry eye progressing over a 2-year period, including barriers to accessing care.
  3. Quantify geographic variation in how social determinants of health affect dry eye prognosis, using multi-center records from the SOURCE Consortium covering more than 4 million unique patients.
  4. Externally validate the single-center prediction models in other centers, accounting for center-specific factors such as the density of eye care professionals.

More about the research

People do not all get the same diagnosis, treatment or outcomes. Social determinants of health, the conditions where people are born, live, work and age, may help explain who receives care and whose disease worsens. A systematic review by the team, an organized survey of past studies, found gaps in what is known about these factors in dry eye.

Why it matters

The models could give clinicians personalized risk estimates for patients with dry eye using information already sitting in health records. Evidence on which social factors drive unequal access and outcomes may guide intervention programs that reduce disparities in dry eye care, and could improve long-term outcomes and quality of life for people living with the disease.

Develop large language model pipelines that extract amblyopia treatment, adherence and visual outcome information from free-text ophthalmology clinical notes, where these concepts are documented inconsistently and not in structured EHR fields.

University of California-Los Angeles, CA·Public Health & Epidemiology

Evaluate whether Whole Person Care-Los Angeles, a social care program for Medicaid enrollees, improves diabetes screening, retention in care, medication adherence and blood sugar control compared with propensity score-matched non-enrollees.

Suzanne Mitchell

University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, MA·Public Health & Epidemiology

Test whether REDDCAT2 delays hospital readmission within 90 days compared with usual discharge care for patients with type 2 diabetes, in a comparative effectiveness trial. The intervention pairs REDD-CAT social-needs screening with patient navigation.
