Rapid whole genome sequencing reads a baby's entire DNA within days. Studies show it speeds diagnosis and life-saving treatment for critically ill newborns, and current guidelines recommend it as standard care.

What they work on
- Build logic models mapping barriers and facilitators to adopting rapid whole genome sequencing in Level 4 (metropolitan, well-resourced) and Level 3 (rural, lower-resourced) NICUs.
- Develop implementation strategies tailored to each NICU level that address the barriers identified to using rapid genome sequencing for critically ill newborns.
- Test these strategies in a small-scale demonstration project to see whether they improve uptake of rapid whole genome sequencing in neonatal intensive care.
More about the research
Yet many neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) still do not use it. This gap delays answers for families, and it is wider in rural hospitals with fewer resources, where healthcare inequities already exist.
Why it matters
Closing the gap between guidelines and practice could bring faster genetic diagnoses and earlier treatment to critically ill newborns. The benefit could be largest in rural, lower-resourced NICUs, where adoption lags most. The strategies may help reduce healthcare inequities in neonatal genomic medicine.
