Proven ways to prevent and manage type 2 diabetes exist, but they do not reach everyone who needs them. Diabetes translation research studies how to move these strategies from trials into real clinics and communities.

Grants
2 known grants, through May 2031

What they work on

  1. Link diabetes translation research expertise across Southern California institutions and the VA to support new partnerships within and between institutions and with regional and national partners.
  2. Attract, retain and grow a multidisciplinary base of new and established investigators studying type 2 diabetes prevention and management.
  3. Provide research support through the Population Health Improvement and Person-Focused Intervention Cores and a Pilot and Feasibility Program for new diabetes translation projects.
  4. Deliver seminars and hands-on workshops on diabetes mechanisms, care and prevention, and on methods such as machine learning, target trial emulation and pragmatic clinical trial design.
  5. Build 10 core competencies in clinical and translational research, including EHR data use and community engagement, and measure progress with an external evaluator.

More about the research

The two grants here build a regional center that supports this kind of research across Southern California and the Veterans Affairs (VA) health system.

Why it matters

People with or at risk for type 2 diabetes could benefit if effective prevention and management programs reach more clinics and communities, including veterans in the VA system. By supporting research partnerships and training investigators in methods such as EHR data analysis and pragmatic trials, the center may speed the adoption of interventions that work.
