Modern chips often pack an entire computer onto one piece of silicon, called a system-on-chip. They run cars, factories and medical monitors, and they handle sensitive information such as encryption keys.

What they work on

  1. Develop a formal foundation for information flow analysis in system-on-chip designs that accounts for asynchronous events, such as interrupts, and for hardware-firmware interaction, which cause hard-to-detect security violations.
  2. Build an automated, integrated toolset for information flow validation that combines dynamic testing and formal analysis with machine learning to find unauthorized access to sensitive on-chip assets.
  3. Integrate the information flow analysis tools with industrial chip validation flows so they can be adopted in practical hardware design.

More about the research

If an untrusted part of the chip can read or alter that information, the results can be dangerous, even life-threatening in health monitoring devices. This collaborative project builds the theory and automated tools for information flow validation, which means checking that sensitive assets on a chip cannot be accessed or corrupted by unauthorized agents.

Why it matters

Chips in vehicles, industrial systems and medical devices hold sensitive data that attackers could steal or tamper with, with potentially disastrous consequences. Automated tools that catch hidden information leaks, especially those triggered by interrupts and other unpredictable events, could help chip designers find security flaws before devices ship. These tools are meant to fit into existing industry validation workflows.
