Pain right after surgery can sometimes become chronic pain that lasts for months or years. Women having surgery for suspected gynecologic cancers are especially vulnerable to this.

What they work on
- Determine whether eHealth Mindful Movement and Breathing (eMMB), a brief remote yoga-based program, improves postoperative pain and other surgical outcomes, in a randomized controlled trial of 122 women having surgery for suspected gynecologic cancers.
- Examine how eMMB affects proximal biobehavioral outcomes, the near-term mental and physical changes thought to explain its benefits, compared with an empathic attention control.
- Identify barriers and facilitators to building eMMB into routine clinical care through semi-structured interviews with 18–24 patients, providers, yoga instructors and clinical champions.
More about the research
Treatments without drugs that address both the mind and the body might help stop acute pain from becoming chronic. Yoga, which combines meditation, movement and breathing, reduces pain, distress and sleep problems and improves physical function. It also fits goals of standard surgical care, such as getting patients moving early and encouraging deep breathing. Even so, few rigorous studies have tested yoga delivered alongside surgery.
Why it matters
Chronic pain affects a growing number of people, and surgery is one route into it. If eMMB works, this low-cost, brief yoga-based program could be widely offered to women having surgery for gynecologic cancers. It could also be extended to other surgeries to help prevent acute pain from becoming chronic.
