Andrew Mesecar
Purdue University, IN·Biochemistry
How can discoveries made at the lab bench become better ways to detect and treat cancer? These grants support the Purdue Institute for Cancer Research, a basic science cancer center that does not treat patients.

- Grants
- 2 known grants, through Apr 2031
What they work on
- Coordinate three cancer research programs (Cell Identity and Signaling; Targets, Structures, and Drugs; and Drug Delivery and Molecular Sensing) that link basic discoveries to new therapies and diagnostics.
- Operate six shared resources, including mass spectrometry, biomolecular structure determination and genome editing facilities, so that members can analyze cells, proteins and nucleic acids and build new animal models of cancer.
- Carry out a five-year strategic plan for the cancer institute, tracking progress toward its goals with an interactive dashboard and review by an External Advisory Board.
More about the research
Its goal is to make all cancers detectable, treatable and curable through fundamental discovery, new tools and new therapies. It also trains the next generation of cancer researchers. The grants describe Mesecar's role as director of the center. They do not describe a single laboratory research project.
Why it matters
The center works to move basic discoveries toward cancer therapeutics, diagnostics, devices and instruments. Pet dogs with naturally occurring cancers serve as a model for testing and validating drugs. Mass spectrometry tools are used to identify cancer markers. Over time, this work could benefit people with cancer through new drugs and detection methods. The center also trains future cancer researchers.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
