Cancer does not strike all communities equally. Across the 82 Missouri and Illinois counties served by Siteman Cancer Center, 15% of residents live in rural areas and 29% live in Medically Underserved Areas, places with limited access to health services.

What they work on

  1. Monitor and evaluate cancer burden and differences in screening, mortality and morbidity across 82 Missouri and Illinois counties, comparing rural communities and Medically Underserved Areas.
  2. Accelerate outreach, education and clinical resources in partnership with communities and a community advisory board to reduce cancer burden across the Siteman Cancer Center catchment area.
  3. Support community-based cancer research and promote clinical trial participation through continuous evaluation, education and a clinical studies outreach team.

More about the research

The region has a high cancer burden overall, with more late-stage diagnoses and high cancer death rates. Many counties rank in the worst US quarter for deaths from breast, lung, prostate and colorectal cancer. This work aims to ensure that every patient and community in the region can benefit from advances in cancer care and research.

Why it matters

People in rural and medically underserved parts of Missouri and Illinois have high rates of late-stage cancer diagnosis and high death rates from breast, lung, prostate and colorectal cancer. Tracking where screening and outcomes fall short, expanding community outreach, and increasing clinical trial participation could help these communities get earlier diagnoses and better access to new cancer treatments.
