Diana Wilkie
University of Florida, FL·Medicine & Clinical Research
Florida and California have the highest cancer incidence and death rates of any U.S. states, and some groups living there are more likely to survive poorly after diagnosis and treatment.

- Grants
- 1 known grant, through Aug 2028
What they work on
- Investigate the biological basis of differences in pancreas cancer outcomes among Florida and California populations, using specimens collected across the three-institution partnership in a full project and a pilot project.
- Examine biological factors behind differences in lung cancer outcomes among populations in the two states, supported by shared tissue modeling, drug development and bioinformatics cores.
- Train 160 investigators, including 120 students and early-stage investigators, in research on cancer illness and death through the Center's Research Education Core.
- Share research findings and educate communities about pancreas and lung cancer risk reduction and prevention through existing community partnerships, aiming to improve participation in biomedical research.
More about the research
Understanding why cancer outcomes differ among populations, and building the research workforce to study it, could help reduce that burden.
Why it matters
Pancreas and lung cancers are among the deadliest cancers. Findings on why outcomes differ across populations in Florida and California could point to groups at higher risk and to biological differences worth targeting. Community outreach may improve prevention and participation in research. Training 120 students and early-stage researchers could expand the pool of cancer scientists.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
