Every day, about 1,900 children die from injuries, and more than 95% of these deaths happen in low- and middle-income countries. Children in sub-Saharan Africa are hit hardest.

What they work on
- Describe barriers to care for injured children at health centers and district hospitals in Tanzania, the first level of medical contact, using a mixed methods approach.
- Develop the P-KIDs CARE triage intervention iteratively with stakeholders using the nominal group technique, followed by a pre-implementation assessment and refinement.
- Pilot P-KIDs CARE in Tanzanian facilities and carry out an implementation-focused formative evaluation of how well it streamlines patient assessment, stabilization and referral.
More about the research
Many of these deaths and disabilities could be prevented if seriously injured children received good care quickly. Delays often happen at the first clinic or hospital a child reaches, during triage, the process of assessing, stabilizing and deciding where a patient should go next.
Why it matters
Injuries are a leading cause of death and disability in children, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. A practical, scalable triage intervention at first-contact health facilities in Tanzania could shorten delays in getting injured children to definitive care. That could reduce deaths and lasting harm in resource-limited health systems.
