Cervical cancer kills about 300,000 women each year, and more than 90% of those deaths happen in low- and middle-income countries. Most cases could be prevented.

HPV DNA testing
- Grants
- 1 known grant, through Aug 2029
What they work on
- Test implementation best practices for a Screen & Treat program that uses self-collected HPV DNA testing, delivered within HIV care and treatment services at selected health facilities in Mozambique.
- Measure how many screen-eligible women in routine HIV care get screened, and what share of HPV-positive women go on to receive treatment for precancerous lesions.
- Evaluate secondary implementation outcomes with mixed methods, combining quantitative and qualitative data, guided by the Knowledge-to-Action framework for moving evidence into clinical care.
- Use the trial's results to inform future research on scaling up self-sampling-based cervical cancer screening across Mozambique.
More about the research
Vaccines protect against human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus behind nearly all cervical cancers, and screening can catch precancerous changes in women already infected so they can be treated early. The World Health Organization now recommends HPV testing for screening women aged 25–49, but affordable testing is hard to get across sub-Saharan Africa, and there is little real-world experience with it there.
Why it matters
Women living with HIV in Mozambique, and in similar low-resource settings, could benefit from easier access to cervical cancer prevention. If self-collected HPV testing paired with prompt treatment works well inside HIV clinics, the findings could guide Mozambique's health system in expanding the program nationwide. That could help reduce preventable cervical cancer deaths.
