University of Southern California, CA·Mathematics & Statistics

Cancer research centers generate large volumes of genomic and clinical data, and that data is only as useful as the systems that clean, store, analyze and share it. The Bioinformatics, Statistical, and Methodological Core serves this role for the Florida-California Cancer Research, Education & Engagement (CaRE2) Health Center: it handles data management, cleaning, storage and release to public databases for everything the center produces, and supplies analytical support to the center's cancer research projects and the projects that grow out of them.

Grants

What they work on

  1. Provide bioinformatics and statistical support across CaRE2 Health Center projects, including job scheduling and interfaces for investigators, in-depth quality control of high-throughput sequencing data from multiple platforms, and access to public datasets.
  2. Carry data management through from collection to analysis and interpretation, supporting investigators in preparing abstracts, manuscripts and grant applications.
  3. Build and maintain a federated data repository that lets center members across institutions share high-quality data and release it promptly to the center and the scientific community.
  4. Develop online educational materials and deliver seminars and interactive lectures on bioinformatics, statistical and methodological topics for center members, with contributions from guest experts.

More about the research

The core's work is organized around three aims. The first is direct analytical support: setting up the job scheduling and interfaces that center investigators need, running in-depth quality control and assessment of high-throughput sequencing data from multiple platforms, and making publicly available datasets easier to reach. On the statistics side, support spans the whole arc from data collection through analysis and interpretation to the preparation of abstracts, manuscripts and grant applications. The second aim is to build and maintain a federated data repository — a shared resource that lets center members at different institutions work with each other's data while keeping quality high and releasing results promptly to members and the wider scientific community. The third aim is educational: developing online materials and running seminar series and interactive lectures, delivered by core members and invited experts, so that center investigators across sites can learn bioinformatics and statistical methods.

Why it matters

Reliable data handling and statistical analysis determine whether findings from cancer studies hold up and whether they can be reused. By quality-controlling sequencing data, maintaining a shared repository across two states' institutions, releasing data to public databases, and training investigators in analytical methods, this core supports the cancer research conducted through the CaRE2 Health Center and makes its datasets usable by the broader research community.
