Lance Waller
Emory University, GA·Public Health & Epidemiology
Our health is shaped not only by genes but by everything we are exposed to over a lifetime: air, water, chemicals, diet and social conditions. Scientists call this total exposure the exposome.

What they work on
- Develop and support data pipelines that link HERCULES Exposome Research Center members' environmental and health datasets to research projects large and small.
- Advance customized data management and analysis plans, apply new analytic approaches, and expand the center's data and analysis infrastructure for exposome research.
- Train center members and partners in data science principles, statistical and machine learning design and analysis, and computational systems biology modeling tools.
- Partner with community groups to identify existing data sources and support citizen science data collection, management and communication plans.
More about the research
Studying it means combining very different kinds of data, collected in different places at different times, and turning them into results that communities and policymakers can understand.
Why it matters
Turning mixed environmental and health data into clear, usable findings is a major barrier to learning how exposures affect health. By building shared data pipelines, analysis tools and training, this work could help researchers, community members and policymakers understand how the exposome affects community well-being and use that knowledge to improve human health.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
Closest labs
Matthew Salomon
University of Southern California, CA·Mathematics & Statistics
Provide bioinformatics and statistical support across CaRE2 Health Center projects, including job scheduling and interfaces for investigators, in-depth quality control of high-throughput sequencing data from multiple platforms, and access to public datasets.
Cristian Coarfa
Baylor College of Medicine, TX·Genetics
Provide high-quality genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and metagenomics services, which measure DNA, gene activity, proteins, small molecules and microbes. The goal is to accelerate precision environmental health research.
