Discoveries about diabetes made in animals or in cells grown in the lab do not always hold true in people. To truly understand human disease, researchers need studies in humans.

What they work on
- Provide shared infrastructure for complex human diabetes studies, such as insulin-glucose clamps, MRI and spectroscopy, PET scans, stable isotope infusions and indirect calorimetry, in adults and children.
- Support studies using body composition measurement, muscle biopsies, dietary interventions and closed-loop insulin delivery, which automatically adjusts insulin to glucose levels.
- Centralize staff and procedures to cut costs and to support investigator-initiated clinical trials together with the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation.
- Train emerging physician and clinical scientists in Medicine, Nursing and Public Health to lead translational diabetes research.
More about the research
The Yale Diabetes Research Center (DRC) Translational Research Core exists to bridge that gap. It gives clinical investigators the specialized facilities and staff they need to study diabetes and related metabolic disorders in adults and children. The long-term goal is to support strategies that may lead to the treatment, prevention or cure of diabetes.
Why it matters
People with diabetes and related metabolic disorders, both adults and children, could benefit as findings from basic research are tested in human studies. Shared research facilities make complex human studies cheaper and more practical. This could speed the development of strategies to treat or prevent diabetes and help train future clinical researchers.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.

Provide measurements of hormone sensitivity, body composition and energy balance in genetically engineered mice, including indirect calorimetry and glucose and insulin tolerance tests.
Mark Deboer
University of Virginia, VA·Medicine & Clinical Research
Test whether adding real-time tracking of insulin sensitivity to the APEX automated insulin system lowers hypoglycemia risk (Low Blood Glucose Index) during and after exercise, in a randomized crossover hotel study.
Francisco Pasquel
Emory University, GA·Medicine & Clinical Research
Test in a multicenter randomized trial whether automated insulin delivery with a disposable patch pump and remote real-time continuous glucose monitoring increases time in target glucose range (70–180 mg/dL) compared with daily insulin injections plus CGM in hospitalized adults.
