People aging with HIV tend to accumulate other health conditions and to develop problems usually associated with much older age, such as memory loss and difficulty walking or doing daily tasks. These are called geriatric syndromes.

What they work on

  1. Use user-centered design with clinic stakeholders to select implementation strategies for a clinic-based screening process for cognitive and physical function impairment among people with HIV aged 50 and older.
  2. Evaluate implementation outcomes of the screening and care-pathway protocol for memory loss and physical function impairment at the Montefiore Center for Positive Living, an HIV clinic serving more than 2,800 patients a year.
  3. Identify contextual factors that explain variability in implementation outcomes across patients, providers and other clinic staff, using qualitative and mixed research methods.
  4. Train clinic staff to administer evidence-based cognitive and physical function assessments and to arrange appropriate follow-up care for older patients with HIV.

More about the research

Despite being common in this group, they often go unrecognized in routine HIV care, and no one has reported how often older patients with HIV actually receive a geriatrics assessment. This project asks how to build such screening into an HIV clinic and make it stick.

Why it matters

Older adults with HIV are at elevated risk of memory loss and physical decline, yet these problems are frequently missed during HIV visits. Showing how screening and referral can be embedded in a busy HIV clinic could lead to earlier identification, timelier linkage to specialty care, and practical guidance for sustaining and expanding HIV geriatric programs at other clinics serving aging patients.
